Medical and engineering are passé. Today’s youth are looking for new and exciting careers. One such field that is rising these days is media and mass communication. Although, journalism has always been around but with a sudden spurt in the number of news channels and newspapers, the demand for mass communication experts has increased manifold. A lot of students are looking to pursue courses in mass communication and acquire skill sets that will help them make a career in this field. Apart from journalism, advertising, modeling, acting, jockeying etc also fall under the same category and are gaining popularity. The education scenario is also bright as many good institutes are offering full-time and part-time courses in media, films and mass communication. The courses can be pursued both at degree and diploma level.

Mass communication clearly implies that it involves communicating to the masses through different modes. According to the target audience and the message to be broadcast, the media is selected. The information that has to transferred could be news or entertainment or both. Print, Television and radio are the most popular mediums through which one can communicate with the masses. Apart from these three, Internet is a fast upcoming medium gaining popularity in recent years, though it mainly caters to the young and educated audience.

The top institutes in mass communication are spread over various cities in India. Of the most renowned, Mudra Institute of Communications in Ahmedabad, Gujarat is a good option. It offers PG Diploma in Management in Communications (PGDMC), PG Programme in Communication Management and Entrepreneurship (PGPCME), PG Certificate Programme in Integrated Marketing Management (PGCPIMM), Career Development Programme in Design Communications Management (CDP-DCM) and PG Certificate in Advertising Management (PGCAM). It is a renowned institute and conducts admission tests for intakes.

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication based in New Delhi is another good institute. Established, over thirty years ago, the IIMC has gained recognition from UNESCO as a centre of excellence in the field of communication teaching, training and research. It provides a variety of courses including print journalism, photo journalism, radio journalism, television journalism, development communication, communication research, advertising and public relations.

The Asian College of Journalism based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a postgraduate college that provides students with journalism education adapted to the specific needs of India and other developing countries in Asia. The curriculum is based on the trend and thrust of convergence in the media, and the consequent demands for multiple skills made on the contemporary journalist.

St. Xavier Institute of Communications (XIC) based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, offers a variety of services in training and production. XIC was initiated in 1969 by The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India to develop scholarship and professionalism in the field of media. It is currently managed by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) of the Bombay Province.

The Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media (IIJNM) based in Bangalore, Karnataka, is a leading post-graduate school of journalism and media. The curriculum combines both theory and practice to prepare its graduates for positions in the media industry. The centre started in January 2001.

Times School of Journalism, based in New Delhi, offers Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism including six weeks internship with the Times of India and The Economic Times. The eligibility criteria is graduation in any discipline with 50% marks. However, a PG degree and a background in Economics, Management, Finance, Law or Science and Technology preferred.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) also offers courses in mass communication. It provides basic knowledge to students on Journalism and Mass Communication by sharpening the basic skills needed to function effectively in a media organization.

For those interested in acting and modeling, Film and Television Institute of India – Pune is a good option. It is an old and renowned institute and has produced well-known actors working in the film and television industry today.

There are various branches of mass communication. In journalism, the main purpose is to inform, educate and enlighten the masses on current issues and various other social issues that are relevant to them. These days, reporters, news casters, video journalists, cameramen are in great demand. Advertising involves brand-building through effective and innovative communication. The market for advertising is also very competitive

Then, film-making is another interesting option. It involves study of skills used in acting, directing, producing, script writing, cinematography, sound recording, visual mixing and editing etc. These days, lots of youngsters are taking to film-making and are interested in assignments behind the camera as well. It requires a lot of creativity and thinking in a broader perspective. Next comes publishing & printing. A course in publishing involves study of scientific methods used in this industry. It also requires editorial understanding.

Public Relations as a stream is also part of mass communication. PR executives are also in demand as they are responsible for building the public image of an organization.

A report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci), says that India’s print and broadcast industries are expected to grow at a compounded annual rate of 14% and 22%, respectively, until 2012. While print is estimated to become a Rs.28,100 crore industry by 2012, television will be a Rs.60,000 crore sector. Thus, there is no dearth of opportunities in all these fields but youngsters have to understand that it is not just glamour but also a lot of hard work that goes in these professions.

Group Cruise Aboard Royal Caribbean

Intelligent research is the first step to launching (or not launching) any new business venture. Thinking like the individuals you are most hoping to influence is the key to developing a successful business model.

I’ve saved clients millions of dollars over the years by identifying critical threats (competitive, legal, moral, etc.) to their proposed new venture, simply by putting myself in the shoes of their target audience, and behaving as they would when presented with the new option being offered. In some cases, I’ve identified far better business models to pursue and directed my clients accordingly. But in many case, I’ve advised existing or prospective clients not to pursue the new venture at all, for reasons discovered through my intensive due diligence process.

Around Y2K, a top cruise industry executive asked my opinion regarding how I might rebrand their primary cruise line to better articulate their marketing message. The first thing I did was search the web to see how all other brands were attempting to sell me on the idea of a cruise, and how they claimed to be different from every other option available of the eighteen or so to select from. I quickly discovered that virtually every brand was claiming to be just perfect for me, without knowing anything about me or other people like me.

Every brand was speaking to me from their own perspective (selling me on their brand), while my own personal concerns centered around whether I would even enjoy cruising at all, regardless of brand. I decided that I might be compelled to cruise if it were with a ship full of other people like me, who I might most enjoy partying with for a week. I also quickly noticed that no cruise line gave me the option to search for cruises based on the types of people I might like to cruise with enough to tip me off the fence to pull the trigger and actually book a cruise.

While every brand in the industry was touting their destinations, size of ship, amenities, service, price, etc., the one thing I was most interested in – cruising with a bunch of other people that I would actually enjoy spending a week with – was not a searchable option. When every brand in an industry tells you they are just perfect for everyone, the entire industry is actually telling you that they don’t know you or care about your wants and desires.

So there it was – the reason why more people weren’t cruising was staring me right in the face, and the ramifications of this revelation were not only significant for the single brand for whom I was consulting, but for the entire cruise industry. An industry that was accustom to broadcasting their marketing message in one direction was about to be confronted with a new paradigm, the requirement for a cultural shift toward two-way dialogue as a marketing necessity.

Under my guidance, the results of these early revelations led to a cultural transformation not only at this Fortune 500 cruise line, but across the entire industry as their competitors responded to our online initiatives. Consumers had found their voice through online social media, and began configuring their own cruises not around brands or itineraries per se, but around groups formed online by others like themselves. We eavesdropped on their conversations as the groups were forming online, anticipated their wants and desires, and delighted them once on board, by honoring their group with a party and memorializing their time together in pictures.

My theory went as follows: Once groups form, and vacations are enjoyed, they plan another cruise, together, with even more of their friends. As the trend develops over the years, groups will double in size each year, and eventually grow large enough to charter entire ships (saving the cruise line 15% on travel agent fees and 100% on marketing costs), and they won’t even care what brand name is on their ship.

As group leaders emerge and find their voice, they may select a different ship or different itinerary for the group’s next cruise, but it was highly unlikely they would opt to switch brands – as such a move is too disruptive to the group. Brand loyalty is a happy byproduct in this case – not as a result of the superior service delivered, but because the switching cost (disruption and angst within the group) is simply too high. As “the group becomes the brand,” the industry can spend less on brand marketing (reduce or eliminate television advertising), and more on delivering the experience at a better value to these devoted groups.

The world of information is at your fingertips, provided you bother to commit the time and effort, and ask the right questions. Before I embark on any new concept, whether for myself or my clients, I’ve been known to spend several days with as many as 15 Google tabs open at one time, in search of total information awareness on all aspects related to the target concept. Every Google search can open a door to new elements that may not previously have occurred to you, many of which are critical to understanding whether your new venture is actually going to be perceived by the market in the way that you think it will be.

Unless and until you are willing to step out of your own shoes and into those of the people you are most trying to influence (at every level of the value chain), you can’t really know whether your product/service, messaging, price point, delivery method, etc. is truly going to result in the only thing that matters, profit.

Communication Myths – 3 Myths Debunked http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2008/08/communication-myths-3-myths-debunked/ http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2008/08/communication-myths-3-myths-debunked/#comments Sat, 16 Aug 2008 09:45:10 +0000 jeff http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2008/08/communication-myths-3-myths-debunked/ Communication Myths - 3 Myths Debunked

The Three Communication Myths:
Myth 1:
Any problem can be resolved by means of effective communication abilities.
The reality about effective communication abilities are that innumerable problems exist, which cannot be worked out, even though they are grasped. People are of the opinion that the only basis for people facing such a lot of problems is due to their being unable to comprehend one another. When you take time to reflect on it, it may appear to be true. If you glance around, you will discover that a great deal of our problems in fact do spout forth from the absence of adequate communication and comprehension. Nevertheless, albeit everyone is capable of communicating accurately, differences could still arise.
Naturally, all of us are quite dissimilar from each other. Even though we all in some way are able to get our message across explicitly, we would have our own perceptions concerning various issues. The following is a case in point:
You love apples and you believe nothing even comes close to them. Some other person is of the view that oranges are simply out of this world. Therefore, even though you communicate successfully, you will, even then be unable to alter his view.
Myth 2:
When compared with non-verbal communication, verbal communication is a far more competent means of communications
People tend to use words a great deal more and hence claim that the use of words enhances the communication level. Thus, they stress more on fine-tuning their verbal communication abilities. On the other hand, they cannot use mere words to communicate successfully certain emotions.
Definitely, you can employ words to describe that an individual is unhappy, but just one teardrop eloquently expresses the feeling. Actually, people assert that a single picture speaks a thousand words. Most people hold the view that verbal communications are the most efficient because this form of communication is widely preferred and employed. Nonetheless, have you at any time been aware about how much you can convey to people by merely casting a glance at them?
Indeed, this in no way indicates that the non-verbal form of communication is superior to the verbal form. Nonetheless, we need to recognize the fact that people make use of both non-verbal and verbal forms of communication in their daily lives and to inquire of them which is far superior is akin to questioning a bird as to which wing it considers more helpful when flying.
Myth 3:
Technology has a significant influence on effective communications
There are some cases where this holds good. These days, technology ensures that messages are not distorted. The web, particularly, was created to enable people to transmit their messages with minimum distortion. Even so, in reality, when it comes to effective communication abilities, it is people, who are the actual determinants of their efficacy. The way in which a person conveys a message and the manner in which the other takes delivery of it establishes the lucidity of the communication. The discernment of both the recipient and the dispatcher proves how complete the communication was when it arrives at its destination.
The truth about effective communication abilities is that it is to be found within each person. You need to take the necessary steps to refine your communication abilities since no device can assist you improve your skills. Technology is definitely a decisive factor in communications, and helps develop the communication channels for the smooth flow of messages. Yet, the bottom line is that the efficacy of communication rests in a person’s own potential.

The world of Socialized Media is maturing and along with it, our knowledge, expertise, reach, and personal and represented brands are only flourishing. It will continue as long as we realize that these new social tools and networks require an entirely new commitment and embodiment of what we personify and how we can be a genuine resource to the people who define the communities that are important to us.

At the end of the day, everything that’s transpiring around us is actually improving the existing foundation for our business, from service to marketing to product development to sales to executive management, and everything in between.

Social marketing revitalizes and empowers every facet of our workflow and its supporting ecosystem. Seeing the bigger picture and tying our knowledge to the valuable feedback from our communities will help us guide businesses towards visibility, profitability, relevance and ultimately customer loyalty.

Yes, everything is changing. Many have drawn the conclusion that Social Media marketers or Social Media consultants are to the new Web, what Webmasters were to Web 1.0. There’s a rush of excitement and enthusiasm tied to entrepreneurialism and significant short-term profitability in leading, creating, and participating in all things Social. This new breed of expert marketers represent the future of marketing communications indeed, but it is a future that is uncharted, undocumented and forever evolving; meaning, social media is not the final frontier, but merely an important chapter in an ongoing saga that will be studied and advanced for years to come.

For every Social Media expert, we must remember, that there are many more human beings out there who are not using social tools to communicate, but are still equally important to our bottom line. Therefore, our job is to connect our story and our value propositions to people wherever they go to discover and share information – even if it’s in the real world. Social Media is a critical part of a larger, more complete sales, service, communications, and marketing strategy that reflects and adapts to markets and the people who define them.

Therefore we should be realistic in how we integrate Social strategies into the human-powered machine of listening, learning, engaging and evolving.

Social Media is a lesson.

Social Media delivers new communications tools.

Social Media is a distribution channel.

Social Media is a means, not an end.

Social Media is a revelation that we the people have a voice and through the democratization of content and ideas, we can once again unite people around common passions, inspire movement, and ignite change.

In this day and age, Mass Media is all over. It surmounts the activity of the people. It shapes, forms and influences the buying decisions of the majority through its incessant advertising schemes bombarding our daily existence and it seems that there is no stopping it. As a result, this leads to the invincible effects of Mass Media to the society and its people.

The effects of Mass Media in the present time is both extraordinary and dreadful. On the positive sense, Mass Media makes the lives of the people at ease, along with Information and Communication Technologies, they produce a breakthrough and innovative standard of living for the people to embrace and to live by.

Yet for the young people especially for the teens, the upshot of Mass Media to their lives is in some manner destructive. Mass Media is by some means damaging their innocence of reality and their genuine perception of the outside world.

Teens of today were consumed by constant media messages. Anywhere they rest their eyes they will be exposed to countless advertising and marketing messages. Predominantly, the entertainment media largely influences these young people to act and behave in a certain way that will subsequently be accepted by the society and the people around them.

Mass Media exposes different revolutionary sides of reality and of life. Still, it becomes the most celebrated and widely used by the people in this day and age.

In due course, the effects of Mass Media will forever strike humanity and modify its way of living.

Social Media Marketing and the Viral Effect http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2007/07/social-media-marketing-and-the-viral-effect/ http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2007/07/social-media-marketing-and-the-viral-effect/#comments Fri, 06 Jul 2007 09:41:18 +0000 jeff http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2007/07/social-media-marketing-and-the-viral-effect/ Social Media Marketing and the Viral Effect

The world of search and website marketing has really changed over just the past few years.  For many in search, it seems like it was not too long ago that webmasters could have their sites ranking highly on search engines for certain keywords if they took care of the basic tags – meta and description.

Times have changed since then, of course, as there is so much competition in search that now webmasters have to apply extensive search engine optimization and search engine marketing strategies on their sites, in order to get them to rank highly for their keywords across the engines.  Video submissions to such venues as You Tube and Meta Café have recently become staples in all SEO and SEM work.

Social Media Marketing is a relatively new and powerful website marketing tool, and involves increasing a site’s online exposure, across the numerous Social Community Websites and Networks that are now out there.  This increased exposure also involves getting people on these sites and networks to discuss that particular site, as well as its products and/or services, so that a dynamic viral marketing effect is created.

Social Media sites include such popular venues as Amazon, Craig’s List, Digg, Ebay, Facebook, Flickr, Friendster, Google, Live Journal, My Space, Orkut, Twitter and Yahoo. Adept webmasters or SEO people can access these social media communities, and collect relevant data on user behavior and interests, so that they can find out what customers really want.

Social Media Marketing involves several tactics and strategies, including the following:

  1. Submission of the website to all major Social Media Networks and Websites
  2. In-house production of promotional video for the site, and submission of the video to www.youtube.com.  The video’s listing on You Tube is also optimized, and placed on top of the site’s ranking lists, thereby ensuring maximum exposure
  3. Optimization of the video across major search engines, with frequent engine-indexing
  4. Creation of community and friendship groups on Facebook, Friendster and Twitter, with subsequent recruitment of people from around the world who are interested in the Streaming Community
  5. Participation in various forums on Community Networking, with the client site introduced to online visitors through Streaming Community Websites
  6. Submissions of site articles, newsletters and press releases to several submissions websites
  7. Submission of the site’s listing to Live Journal
  8. Employment of MSN Messenger as a full-fledged website marketing tool, to inform the cyber world about the site
  9. Strategic submission of site-related pictures to Flickr, so that visitors notice these submitted materials
  10. Creation of relevant site blogs, with these blogs indexed by Google

Webmasters and SEO Consultants working on a site can effectively complement their SEO and SEM work with these types of Social Media Marketing strategies, further empowering that site to significantly increase its online presence, attract more relevant traffic, and ramp up online conversions.

Definition of Mass Media http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2007/05/definition-of-mass-media/ http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2007/05/definition-of-mass-media/#comments Sun, 20 May 2007 09:42:45 +0000 jeff http://www.comunicacionparalapaz.com/2007/05/definition-of-mass-media/ Definition of Mass Media

According to YourDictionary.com, the definition of Mass Media is those means of communication that reach and influence large numbers of people, especially newspapers, popular magazines, radio, and television.

In my own personal estimation, Mass Media goes along with Information and Communication Technology in this day and age so as to mold a new-fangled way of life to the majority living in this global generation.

Mass Media are those media that are created to be consumed by immense number of population worldwide and also a direct contemporary instrument of mass communication.

Nonetheless, Mass Media is considered as the fourth estate of the society as well. It is the fourth branch of the government. The voice and weapon of the people and the society as a whole.

Then again, by and large when we speak about Mass Media, we immediately perceive that these are communications media that reach the mass of people. From Audio recording and reproduction like records, tapes, cassettes, cartridges, CDs, to Broadcasting Media such as Radio, Television, Cable, to Film or Motion Pictures whether in Cinema or in DVDs, and the Digital Media, the Internet, Mobile Phones, Satellite, and ultimately the Publishing or Print Media which includes Books, Newspapers, Magazines and the run-of-the-mill marvelous Video games.

Needless to say, whatever we have in mind about Mass Media, on th whole, it is all about innovation and modernity that is continually evolving and producing ways to speed up the way humanity is subsisting.

On the whole, I consider the following as the various definitions of Mass Media. Hence, it is now your turn, I urge each and every one right now if what is your definition of Mass Media.

Speak your mind and spread the word!
